Assault Rifle forefather?

I think that the original assault rifle was the World War II German Sturmgewehr. It had all the makings of an assault rifle as we know it today - stamped sheet metal receiver, detachable high capacity magazine, mid-power rifle cartridge, and of course it was a selective fire rifle.
