How do I measure the mm of a chain for adding beads?

I am making earrings and I want to add beads to the end of a chain. I bought the chain from Hobby Lobby the brand is Metal Gallery, but there is no information on the package or company website. How do you measure the diameter of a chain necklace, so I know what mm bead to buy. Thanks!!
