If our religious forefathers had many wives, why is it seen as unacceptable in today's religious environment?

The Old Testament before Jesus was very different. I haven't read into it a lot and I definitely need to read my Bible more but I do know that different things were acceptable and unacceptable in the Old Testament. When Jesus came, everything changed.
